Interested in becoming a Driving instructor?

If you're interested in becoming a driving instructor just phone us for a chat or, e-mail on  info@anderbydrivingcentre.co.uk
We are particularly looking for good quality people in Lincolnshire and surrounding areas.

These initial discussions should give you a good insight as to what is involved in qualifying to become a driving instructor and what it is like working as a driving instructor.

The Qualifying Process?

Our training is of the highest calibre.  Our Instructor Training has an extensive history of succesful training with an excellent record in taking people through all 3 parts of the DSA instructor tests and are highly respected throughout the industry.

You will be taught the modern methods of teaching pupils.  We don’t just TELL pupils what to do – it’s more about encouragement and coaching them into the correct and safe driving methods.

Graham Kent
Graham Kent, the owner of Anderby and Chief Instructor started off as an Approved Driving Instructor (A.D.I.) and has accompanied Learner drivers on literally hundreds of driving tests. He has also accompanied many Trainee Instructors on their Part 2 and Part 3 tests.  As such, he understands exactly what the examiners are looking for.  Graham also holds the Cardington Grade A special test certificate and is a Grade 6 instructor.  Graham has also trained instructors to the Grade 6 standard. (Grade 6 is the highest level that can be achieved).

Your training
Everyone learns at different paces and therefore all training is carried out on strictly a one-to-one basis – this means that your training will be suited to you and you will not have someone else in the back-seat.

We also only charge for the training on a ‘Pay-as-you-Go’ basis – therefore you won’t have to stump up a large sum of money before you’ve even started.  It’s sensible to do it this way as you may find that half way through your training that Driving instructing isn’t for you.

We have summarised below the legal requirements -

However, for more detailed and up-to-date information please also view the DSA/Transport Office web-site page by clicking here:-  Introduction to becoming a driving instructor

1. You need to have held a full UK or European Union (EU/European Economic Area (EEA) unrestricted car driving licence for a minimum of three and a half years and be a mimimum of 21 years old.  Have held it for a total of at least four out of the past six years prior to entering the Register after qualifying

2. Not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years prior to being entered in the Register

3. Be able to read a number plate (glasses or contact lenses are OK to be worn but, obviously you need to wear these during your driving / instructing)

4. Have no more than 6 points on your licence

5. Be a “fit and proper” person to have your name entered in the Register. All convictions, motoring and non-motoring, will be taken into account when the DSA assess your suitability to be entered on the Register. You will be required to have an enhanced level criminal record check. The information from this check will be used by the DSA to assess the suitability of persons applying for inclusion on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors. To help you decide if any conviction you may have could affect any application you might make, you can find the link to the DSA statement on the suitability of ex-offenders in the related items box.

7. Pass the DSA Part 1 examination (Test of Theory and Hazard Perception test)

8. Pass the DSA Part 2* examination (Test of practical driving ability)
Note:- Once this test has been passed - you may be able to obtain sponsorship and become a 'Trainee' Instructor.  You have to undertake a very high quality and demanding training course of a minimum of 40 hours(as stipulated by the DSA) before you can start to teach.  An additional 20 hours of training must also be taken during the initial 12 weeks of you holding a Trainee Licence.

9. Pass the DSA Part 3* examination (Test of Instructional ability)

10. Apply for registration to the DSA within 12 months of passing the final part of the examination.

* The Part 2 and Part 3 tests must be passed within 2 years of passing the Theory Test and you only have 3 attempts at both these exams
